general appearance;; Graced with dark red hair, nearing a red-brown color, and green eyes, Alena has a simply beauty that is not remarkable, but simple. Her red hair, which borders on being a red-brown, is wavy and falls to below her shoulders. Unlike most of the girls her age, she doesn't straighten her hair, and doesn't want to, really. Another thing that is different about her, is the fact that she wears bangs. Most people don't these days, but Alena is one of the few that does, with her red bangs falling to just above her eyes in a ragged line.
Alena has a slight tan, something that most Southerners do. She's not the tannest Southerner you'll ever see, but she's most definitely not pale. She is taller than most girls her age at 5'8", and she is slender. But she is no athlete, and has little muscle in her arms and legs.
general personality;; The one word to sum up Alena's personality is shy. But not the simple shy that some may think is cute. Alena has Social Anxiety Disorder, often shortened to SAD, but an extreme case of it, as doctors have told her. Alena will hardly talk to anybody else, and you'd be lucky to get any words at all from her. Alena could possibly have the worst case of being shy you've ever seen. She'll probably talk to you, but only in few words, and will probably squeak the first time you approach her. And really, you'd be lucky to get anything from her.
Another word that is a big part of Alena's personality is naïve. She is naïve and ignorant to the world around her. She seriously doesn't know anything about murder, killing, sex, or any of that. She mostly thinks the world is a bunch of gumdrops and unicorns. Well, horses, anyways. Maybe not unicorns. But she doesn't know about the bad things about the world, and she certainly is in for it at Winterthorne, a whole new place for her. She'll ask the stupidest questions about things, due to her naïvety, so be prepared. The only thing that she does know about, besides drugs and alcohol, that is bad, is beating and hurting.
Alena does know of drugs and alcohol, however. Then again, born and raised in Southern United States, it isn't much of a surprise. Her own uncle smokes pot, and Alena hates it. She hates all types of drugs, except for prescription drugs. Even some of those, however, she dislikes. And alcohol? The worst thing on the planet, if you asked her. She's never had beer or any other type of alcoholic drinks, which is good, because she can't hold it in the first place. Although a shy girl, she is super protective of her friends, the ones she has, anyways. When she has a friend, they are friends for life. Unless the friend betrays her. Then, they are enemies. But if someone messes with her friends, Alena will stand up and defend them. She may be shy, but she can't stand people being mean to her friends. Or other people in general. Until someone is proven to be mean to others, she'll stand up for them if someone is being mean to them; even if it means talking
to them.

history;;
Alena Riddle was born to Karen and Gabriel Riddle on February 17th in Salem, Virginia, once only being a town. Alena grew up in the outskirts of Salem, bordering on Roanoke County. She grew up on a ranch, where they had several horses and cows. Alena grew up to ride horses, and loving them. She had her own horse, Rocket, who was a bay gelding.
So, you may think the young girl was spoiled. But she really wasn't. Mostly, it was a façade put up by her father, a drunk. He was editor of The Salem Times-Register, the local newspaper. And working with newspapers is probably one of the toughest jobs there could be, especially as editor. He wanted to show his family was a good one, so a façade was put up every day. But when the night fell and the grumpy man came home, the mask fell and so revealed true life at Gabriel's home. Many of Alena's friends at school inquired about the cuts and bruises that marred her skin, but she simply replied that she got them from working with the horses and accidently spooking them.
However, it was not believed when a teacher, and then her guidance counselor, inquired about them. They finally called in her father, and asked about it, and he gave the same story. This time, because it was told by an adult, and a respectable one at that, it was believed. However, Alena was beaten worse than before, cursed for not being believable. The bruises she received were so bad, the hurt so much that she was pretty much scarred for life. She didn't want to get hurt like that again, so she was less talkative, not that she had been a big talker before. And, needless to say, she gained a bit of a fear of men from her father being so cruel and heartless. And the guys in her class? Not very nice to girls like her.
Now, Alena knew about the magical world, her mother and father both being nymphs as well, as odd as it may seem for her father, but she didn't encounter any magical abilities until she was 11, a bit late for a girl with magical abilities. It occured when her horse, Rocket, suddenly reared up on his hind legs. Alena, a horsewoman that knew how to deal with this sort of thing, reached up to grab the horse's halter. Brushing the horse's cheek, a spark of electricity was seen before the horse went down, hard. Luckily, Alena had pulled back her arm, staring wonderingly at her fingers before yelling in fright for her horse. Rocket was lucky, and didn't die from the electricity, but the shock of it left another mark on Alena, and she tries not to touch anybody, in fear of shocking them.
Around the same time, Alena could see in the dark, which she thought was amazing. A big bookworm, she often hid a flashlight so she could read, but with her new ability, she could even see the black words in the dark. And then, finally, at age 12, she learned she had telepathic powers. Rocket had been scared of his owner, so Alena had been working with other horses. But she still missed her bay gelding. One day, as she was staring over the fence at the gelding, she wished that he would come over. And then, much to her surprise, and Rocket's fright, the equine suddenly floated over to her. Alena was extremely surprised, and reached out to touch Rocket's nose, and was able to do so without shocking the horse. In surprise, the telepathic connection was broken, and Rocket, true to his name, galloped away from the freaky girl.
Then, two years later, she received her letter, inviting her to Winterthorne. Having to face a harder world, Alena will be far behind in learning of these things.
