"I need change. I need excitement. I need something."
Annabel Gregors' voice softly echoed off the cave walls, her near-whisper disturbing the deadly silence. The young lady carefully made her way beside the canal, her thoughts solely on how freezing the water would be if she happened to mistep just a tad into the icy underground canal. Stealing a peek to her feet, Miss Gregors instantly imagined water flooding to her knees, soaking her favorite black-and-white checkered Vans and blue jeans. A shiver ran down her spine as she forced the dreadful thought out of her head, not allowing her lovely imagination to dream up the bone-chilling cold that would be produced from her fleeting nightmare.
Today was one of those days where one wakes up believing he will change the world. The course of Annabel's morning went as follows: wake up, decide to do something contemplative today, stretch, brush teeth, and so forth. And, with camera in hand, the young lady ventured to the underground, expecting to discover the cure for cancer and a solution to end world hunger. However, it wasn't long until she became absorbed with her own boring teenage woes. I'm dull, she had concluded after a gruelling inner debate of what made her so... unamazing. And, with that, Annabel burned into her brain that she would be interesting, at least for the day. And what wasn't interesting about trekking through an underground cavern armed with nothing but a camera? "I could be mauled by rabid cave-dwelling grizzly bears," she mused, a soft chuckle escaping her lips soon after. Admittedly, the thought of a massive, vicious carnivore attacking the five-foot-two girl was rather comical in its own sick, gruesome way.
Annabel skillfully manuevered around a particularly tricky spot (at least, tricky for one so natrually ungraceful). Pink lips curled into a faint smile as she tugged and tightened her ponytail then pocketed her hands into her hoodie pouch. Well, it was really her father's hoodie pouch, black and quite oversized with the logo of some team or university that he supported across the chest in red. Underneath, a much girlier pink (with black zebra print, of course!) v-neck tee shirt clung to her torso, providing little warmth but plenty of softness. Wait... What is that? A patch of darkness instantly caught Annabel's attention. You'd think that a lack of light would be constant in a cave; well, not the underground. With the blue-green glow on the cavern wall, the underground's canals reflected enough light from the entrance that majority of the caves were well lit. However, there was a patch of black right in front of her, the light picking up again after a few yards. Curioser and curiouser... she silently quoted, hesitating only slightly before venturing closer.
As she neared the spot, Annabel's footsteps became more and more cautious until standing, quite literally, on the edge of darkness. Tap, tap, tap. She tested the ground before her, making sure it was solid. Sure enough, it was the exact rock that she had been walking on all of this time. Comfortable with its security, Annabel ventured into the black, throwing caution out the back door. Lowering herself with her back against the wall, Annabel plopped herself down on the cavern floor, refusing to let herself acknowledge how, well, freezing it was. There must be some sort of dip in the river, like it goes under the rock for a large enough span that light escapes on the other side... Wow. I'm such a wannabe geek. And there she sat, the glittering glow surrounding her, yet she was still enveloped in darkness.
"So much for rabid bears."

The day had been, so far, uneventful in every possible way. At midday, he had found he had done everything he wanted to do for the day. Evan sighed, staring at his dorm’s ceiling. He crinkled his nose a tad in thought. “What the hell is there to do now?” he wondered aloud, sighing angrily. He hated being bored. Everything about it sucked.
Then it clicked.
There was a cavern of some sorts over yonder and he had heard it was pretty impressive. He shrugged to himself as he slowly got up off his bed. He began to rummage through his dresser, retrieving his new scarf to match his striped sweater. He draped it across his shoulders as he attempted to put on his shoes. After hopping around for a few moments with his shoe dangling off his foot, he finally fell back on his bed, huffing. Pulling on both shoes without falling, he stood up and moved out the door.
He moved across the grounds without having too many issues. A few times, his feet got stuck in the snow and he had to yank them out. Not that big of an issue for a boy his height. Finally getting to the entrance of the cavern, all limbs in tact, he smiled at his accomplishment.
Slowly, he walked inside, staring in awe at the glistening walls. They shined softly but it made the cave light up that much more. His fingers ghosting the wall, he walked along, staring at the canal’s water. “Holy fuck that must be cold,” he muttered to himself, taking his fingers off the wall. Kneeling down next to the canal, he dipped his fingers into the frigid waters, quickly retrieving his hand with a yelp. “Yeah,” he hissed under his breath, “It is cold.”
Evan stood up, looking around him, taking in the underground’s characteristics. One spot, he noted, didn’t look quite right. Aside from the fact that it was abnormally dark, there was a faint glow mixed in. He was pretty sure it wasn’t the cave, since there weren’t other spots like it. Stepping closer, he wrinkled his nose, getting a little anxious. He wasn’t a huge fan of the dark, he realized. What if there was something in it wanting to attack him? He bit his lip unsurely.
“Er… Hello?” he murmured a bit cautiously. He wouldn't admit it, but he was a little scared. Nope, he would never let anyone else know it, but yeah, he was a little apprehensive.
