217...218...219...220..221...222.. Xio eventually lost count of the stairs she took.
"This," Huff. "Is ridiculous," Huff. "Who the hell, put all these," Huff. "Stairs here?" She growled to no one and continued her trudge up the barren stares of the bell towers. Yes, yes, we know, off limits. Like Xio cared. Honestly. What were they going to do? Kick her out? Been there, done that. It was easy to see why these bell towes were so empty. Not because of a silly rule. Because no one in there right mind would climb so many stupid spiraling stairscases to reach the top of this thing, especially in the middle of winter when it was so cold you hardly breath to begin with. However, we know that Xio is the exception to that rule. Not because she's special...because she doesn't listen. And she wanted a really secret place that no one would invade; where she could think and just get away.
There were few places here in the castle that truly felt like she could be here and she was hoping this bell towers would be one. Silence was her friend. She could just read or write something or strum her guitar and no one else would be around to wonder why she wasn't bent on improving her powers like everyone else.
Speaking of guitars, she had left hers in her room today and had only remembered when she was halfway up the stairs. There was no way she was going back for it today. At least she had her Ipod. The battery life was another subject to wonder about alltogether, though. Who knew if it would even turn on.
Yes, finally!
Xio sighed a breath of relaxation and gazed around the bell tower. It was perfect. Quiet, empty; an amazing view. Her eyes scanned the room and took in the scenery. Those dark brown eyes of her sparkled with delight at the large room. She really no one else bothered to come up here. Her full lips covered into a smile as her hands came up to push away her hood to expose a mess of dark curls. Her hair was naturally straight but every now and then Xio acutally did something to it and tried to look decent. Winter wasn't her favorite, that would be fall, but she did enjoy it. Winter gave her a good reason to wear long sleeved clothing without looking ridiculous. At least her pale skin didn't look horrible in the winter. And It helped her look less pale compared to others, so hey, bonus!
Yep, this would do nicely. The girl took a seat at what appeared to be an old stone bench and gazed around the room in admiration. This had to be the first time she had been this happy in weeks.

Sometimes, you just have to take a chance.
The cold air nipped lightly at Evan's skin as he slowly made his way up the bell tower. Sure, it was off-limits. Sure. But it's not like that stopped him. Or any of the other students trying to press their luck. His long fingers ghosted the stone wall on either side of the staircase as he took each step one at a time. One. Breath. Repeat.
His eyes widened as he saw the stairway brighten with each step, signaling his approach to the top – his goal. As he neared the top, he took each step a little quicker. One. Two. Breath. Repeat. In typical Evan Warner fashion, just before he reached the top, just before rounding the bend into the room at the top, he missed a step, stumbling and falling onto the stone stairs. Luckily enough, his hands broke his fall. As did his knees.
Little incidents like this didn’t discourage the boy. He laughed a little, picking himself up and walked up the rest of the stairs at a calm pace. He smiled widely, looking around the room, taking its vastness into account. It was wonderful. It was peaceful. It was occupied.
He stopped, staring at a girl perched on an old stone bench. She seemed to be up here for the same reason as Evan: to have peace and quiet. He shifted his weight from one foot to another and back again, feeling terribly uncomfortable. He always felt awkward and terrible when he intruded on someone’s privacy.
“Uhm…” he muttered, unsure of what to say. He didn’t know who she was. “I’m sorry,” he tried, hoping it was the right thing to say. Normally, he would walk right up to her and introduce himself, ask her how she is and how she liked the cold weather. But this isn’t normally. There was just something that he couldn’t quite place that made this situation so much less than normal.

Quiet is the new loud.
And in this case, with the silence came the reward of hearing almost everything that made a sound. The wind the rustled through the open window, the trees swaying in the distance, the small thud of something falling.
Xio froze for a moment, her ears straining to hear any aftermath. Anything at all, but she could hear nothing. That was one power she hadn't been dealt. Not that she couldn't get it. It was ironic that the power fate her rewarded her with be abalience. In a sense, the entire world was open. All she literally had to do was touch someone and she immediately took on their abilities as well as thoughts and traits for a period of time. Anything anyone could do, she could do too. She still had a little bit of excess power left from the last time she had taken a visit to check up on her abilities. They had run a few tests, made minimal contact. None of the powers could she use really for much, but she there were small doses within her that she could still use for entertainment.
Entertainment was the last word howeve, that Xio would use to describe her gift. In return for this amazing ability to capture other gifts came a price she didn't like to pay. Harm to others wasn't exactly a joy.
This room though, it had a nice presence. It made her content to just sit there and enjoy the beauty of it all. The chance to feel normal.
That normality lasted about ten minutes. Then things shifted back to the reality and she was echoing the awkward rolling off the boy before her. So much for silence and being alone. He wasn't recognizable to her. Cute, yes, but she had never seen him before. The shyness she was used to kicked in at one and she looked away, resembling a somewhat standoff-ish person. "Oh...Uh, Hi." She raised a hand awkwardly and stared at back. Something about him made her want to both retreat even further and introduce herself.
Her eyes traveled over his chiseled face. He was young, she didn't need powers to know that. And tall. Really tall. His posture, though he kept shifting, still gave off a fairly confident vibe. All but his eyes. They seemed to betray him. Or at least it looked that way....Xio took that thought as her cue to stop staring.
"Its fine, I can go."

He kept his eyes glued to the floor, his brown locks falling into his face. He felt bad. Terrible, even. He believed in personal space. In leaving people be when it was needed. He went back on those believes. But, in his defense, it wasn't his fault. He was curious, nosy, adventurous, in need of something to do. He was innocent.
Evan felt the girl’s eyes travel over him, making him squirm a bit more. His teeth clenched tightly on his bottom lip, an annoying habit he had acquired quite recently. When he heard the girl speak, he lifted his eyes to meet hers. As she made the suggestion to leave, he quickly interjected, telling her that she was here first. “No, I-I’m sorry. You were here first. I can leave y’know…” he said, giving her a lopsided smile.
He studied her for a brief moment, taking in her brown curls and her almost standoff-ish manner. Normally, when a person had ‘go away’ clearly written on their face, he’d leave them alone. But as it was said before, this isn’t normally. There was just something both holding him back and pushing him forward. Gravity.
He let out a slight chuckle, hoping to relieve the awkwardness in the air. He hoped. “Uhm…” he hummed for a moment, testing his grounds. “Sorry for intruding,” he mumbled sheepishly. “My name’s Evan,” he said a little more confidently, regaining his normality.

Why was it that Xio has been here first yet the thought of making him turn around and leave made her feel bad? As if she had intruded on his space instead of the other way around? It made no sense however way you looked at it, but well, Xio was used to having the blame shoved upon her. guilt was second nature to her. She felt bad that the kid was looking at her like he had done something wrong. No harm done. But it was still best to leave. If she left then she didn't have to talk and if she didn't have to talk then she wouldn't make a fool of herself or worse say something she would regret and there was no chance at all, or anyone getting hurt. Slightly stupid, yes. It should have been as simple as just don't touch the other person, you can still talk, but talking wasn't Xio's forte. In fact, it kinda scared her.
"No, its cool. I was leaving anyways. You stay." She hadn't mean for her words to sound to mean but that's how they rang in her ears. What was she supposed to say? Social situations weren't for her.
Wow, she caught herself thinking. That's so cute, he has a crooked smile. No--She immediately cut the though off and threw her walls back up. She didn't know him and she didn't want to get to know him. He could have the tower and she would go back to her room. She could sit and look at cute boys in magazines there all she wanted.
She had to go. It didn't appear that he was leaving. If he was staying, then she was going. Simple. Why? She had no idea. But her stubborn mind was made up and that's how it was going down. He didn't seem to catch her expression anyway. He did however, catch her gaze and that only made her more umcomfortable because she knew his eyes were moving over her. She couldn't help but wonder the things that ran through his mind.
It was rather nice how he was trying to lighten up the awkward silence between them when he introduced himself but she seriously doubted that would be enough. Awkwardness kind of followed her. If it involved Xio, it would most like be weird you spoke to her. She forced a smile onto her face. "Nice to meet you, Evan. You can stay if you like. I should get going."
She stood from her spot, the tension still settleing nicely. If she stayed she would feel bad and she would tell him to stay too and then it would weird but she would say something lame as usual.
Sure, she was making a bid deal out nothing but that was Xio. Over analyzing everything. Something about him made her feel like no matter what, it would not be normal. Already his regrowing confident was somewhat intimidating.

Evan looked at her, her eyes showing all the thought process taking place. Too much thought put into something so little as an introduction. An introduction he’ll never get. A frown replaced Evan’s crooked smile as she told him she was leaving and that he could stay. Not like Evan wanted to fight about it, but she was there beforehand and it’s not that big of a deal for him to stay. He could easily find another place to sit around in. This whole ordeal would probably bother him for days if he didn’t do what he felt was right. OCD.
As she stood from her spot, making to leave, he took a step closer to her, hoping she wouldn’t go just yet. Deep down, he felt the need to get to know her. Even just a little bit. With every passing second, that need grew into desperation. With every passing second, he mentally kicked himself repeatedly. Now was one of those times he wished he had the power to make someone stay. He wished he could make her stay.
She was pretty. Very pretty. But he felt like he shouldn’t be thinking that way about her for a few reasons. For many reasons, actually. The fact she was older than him, that was a main one. Another one was the fact that he didn’t like girls. He wasn’t attracted to them. Or, well, he thought he wasn’t. He shouldn’t. He doesn’t know. But she made him want to. To, for sure, be attracted to girls. Almost. That’s something he needed to figure out still. Internal battle. His mind raced. And crashed. And burned. Nothing made sense. Nothing was normal. Nothing. Alternatives.
Eyeing the girl closely, he took another step closer, closing the gap between them by just a few inches each step. “Now,” he said silkily, “Isn’t it rude to not introduce yourself to somebody? Especially if they’re trying to make conversation?” He watched her closely, hoping his words wouldn’t make him sound like a prick. He would hate for somebody, anybody, to think he was a prick, when in reality, if it still existed, he wasn’t.

She says she's no good with words but I'm worse
The silence was killing her. On a normal basis, she actually valued silence but this was weird. Would he just leave or stay already? Sure, she was being a little mean but she had came here to get away from people. There was no rule that said she had to be nice. There world never showed her any compassion before so there was no reason for her to force herself to act cheery around someone she didn’t know. It wasn’t that Xio enjoyed being rude. She really did despise being rude for no reason but she couldn’t help it. Being around others made her anxious. She watched in apprehension as a frown took over the crooked smile he had harbored a few seconds ago. She didn’t want him to feel bad but what could she say?
She really needed to stop over analyzing everything. Doing so was going to get her in trouble one day. His presence was already intimidating enough and the closer he got the more she didn’t know what to. Oh, get a grip. She commanded herself. He’s not going to hurt you, he’s just being polite. Jesus. Being social really wasn’t supposed to be this bad, she was being ridiculous.
She was already on her way when he took another step forward, right in her path. Why wouldn’t he just stay and let her go? There were better she could do right now than stand here and mumble incoherently. Like…um…Well, okay, there was really nothing better to do she was just nervous.
Her eyes kept drifting back to his. Staring was impolite but she couldn’t help it, he was good looking. Not that it mattered. He was like fifteen or sixteen or something. And she didn’t date. Because dating involved physical contact and that was a big no-no with Xio. It wasn’t her choice by far. She had just been cursed with poisonous skin. Why was she even arguing with herself? Who cared! It wasn’t like that anyway. She had known him for like a total of five or six minutes.
And why did he keep coming closer?! She mirrored his steps and took one back; frowning in confusion. Was he seriously trying to act smooth? She raised an eyebrow at his statement. “Sorry to disappoint you.”
He could make conversation all he wanted. That didn’t mean she was going to stick around. She could leave if she wanted to. Right? So why did it feel like she was being the rude one here?
“I don’t do ‘conversations,’’ she assured him as she took another step around him.

Evan’s eyebrow might as well have been glued into that constant arch he’s had for the past seven or so minutes. This girl, the name of which he still did not know, obvious didn’t want to talk to him. Let alone be around him. For some odd reason, this thought made his insides pang with hurt. Never before has somebody not wanted to talk to him that badly. Sure, he’s had his occasional scuffle with someone having a bad day. But nothing ever this bad.
He watched her step backwards in sync with his step forward. He smirked slightly before forcing it to disappear. He studied her for a moment as she informed him that conversations weren’t quite her thing. He paused for a moment before countering her next step, blocking her way out. He looked down at her, considering he was quite a bit taller, and attempted to hold her gaze. If he learned anything, he’s great at keeping eye contact. If that means anything to anybody else but him, he doesn’t know. But it’s true.
“Well, this,” he said, waving his hand dismissively in the air, “Could be considered conversation. Well, if you gave a little more speech.” He tried to read her eyes, anything that could tell him why she was like this. Too much thought process, yeah, he got that one. But was this normal? This ‘normal’, whatever it was, wherever it was, he really needed to stop mentioning it mentally. It’s no longer there. Nonexistent.
Evan stopped for a moment, relaxing into his stance. If she wanted to leave so badly, he might as well be courteous. But not without at least a few more words from her. That’s all he needed. For now. They’ll run into one another later on and then he’ll coax a few more words out of her. Baby steps. Ebbing forward. “Why do you feel the need to leave so badly?” he asked her, eyeing her closely, yet again.
Obviously, manners were thrown out of the closest window because, for some reason, he found himself being more rude than normal. Well, it’s not like he was generally rude, but this situation called for a little back up force: attitude.

Good God, I wish I was tall.
She wondered how paranoid and weird she looked countering all of his efforts to be nice and make conversation. Normal people, even on a bad day, were less odd then she was being right now. And they were waaaay less rude, too. Her bottom lip fell between her teeth. He obviously either didn’t know that staring was rude or he just didn’t care because he’d wore that same look for like, the past seven minutes.
Did he find this amusing, this making her feel uneasy? Because she didn’t find it funny one bit so he could wipe that smirk off his face no matter how cute it was. As if playing dance partner wasn’t enough he now had a hold of her gaze and it was hard to look away. Damn him. H had her for the moment and she had a feeling he knew it. Why was he making this difficult for her? He didn’t even know her.
The boy towered over her. He was so tall it made her feel shorter than she already was.
Well, this could be considered conversation.
She glared at Evan. “More speech, thanks for that tip,” She quipped. “I’ll keep it in mind.” Sarcasm was second nature to her, it was a reflex not something that he should take to offense. Of course, he didn’t know that, so he probably would which made her feel worse. She made a mental note to herself to work on her social skills when she got home. Not that she would need them much.
At least he had stopped taking steps towards her. Now it wasn’t so bad. She had the feeling that he was going to stop this persistency and let her pass since he wasn’t leaning forward and blocking her anymore. She sighed very quietly in relief and started past him again, thankful for the release of tension in the air.
She would have made it past him except that once again he made her stop in her tracks. This time is was his simple question that aroused so many complex answers, she really didn’t know where to begin. She really didn’t know if she wanted to answer him at all but she felt she owed him that much for her rudeness. That much she could give him, even if that made her a little upset too.
Xio let out another breath of frustration and turned on her heel to face him, ending up closer to him than she had planned to. She hadn’t expected him to right there, actually waiting on answer but in fact, he seemed highly interested as to why she was trying to avoid him so badly. Whoa. She stepped back and cocked her head to one side. “Look.” she spoke quickly, her tone irritated. “Its nothing personal. Really. I’m just not good in social situations. And being around other people makes me uneasy. I don’t know why, I’m just weird like that, okay? Sorry.” She rolled her eyes and turned back on her heel once more. What did it matter why she didn’t want to be here? She the right to leave whenever she pleased.

Evan shook his head, tossing his brown hair around a bit. He let out an almost amused sigh. He wondered if she was like this to everyone. Or if she was just being like this to him because he was obviously younger and insignificant. Because, you know, that’s normally how it goes. Upper class power. Food chain.
He huffed slightly, watching her walk off, turn around closer than she planned and back away. Yeah, there’s personal space. But there’s also treating someone like plague. He wondered if there was something about physical and, now that he thought about it, emotional closeness that made her uneasy. Or was she just socially awkward? Or just all of the above?
“Well,” he muttered, in response to her previous statements. “First of all, I know it’s nothing personal, obviously. I don’t know you and you don’t know me,” he said, although in the back of his mind he yelled ‘but I’d like you to know me and I’d like to know you’. “Secondly,” he said, starting a sort of short pace line in front of her. “These sorts of situations,” cue his hand being waved in the air nonchalantly, “Don’t have to be awkward. All you have to do is try.”
He stopped in front of her, looking down straight into her eyes. For a moment, he held her gaze again before saying, “There’s really no need to apologize, no matter how weird you may be.” He smiled at her, hoping that she would at least attempt to try and communicate. He liked it when people talked. “Although,” he said, turning on his heels and making his pace line again. “If you feel the need to apologize, I guess your name would be a good place to start.”
He stopped pacing at the end of his imaginary line, a few feet away from her. Guidance tracks. He turned around half-way to look at her with his eyebrows raised, hoping that maybe, just maybe, that would be apology enough.

If you let me, I could, I’d show you how to build your fences; set restrictions
Now she wasn’t going to worry about being rude because he evidently wasn’t either. She watched him with one eyebrow arched and one hand on her hip as he made his comeback. His response made her anger flare for no apparent except that she didn’t really care what he had to say even though a small part of her desperately wanted to stop and try to get to know him. A very small part. Perhaps not small enough. “Maybe,” she huffed, “I don’t want to try.” He wasn’t going to wave his hand around and make her feel stupid if she could help it. And he had better stop pacing too, that was annoying. As far as she was concerned, she was on no one’s watch but her own.
She wanted to groan and roll her eyes because it was the only thing she could think of to make him stop doing that thing where he stopped and stared. She was going to stare back, he knew it. She knew it. She didn’t like that she didn’t even know him and yet he had this hold on her. Things were okay for a moment, as long as she kept her mind on anything but the painful awkward situation they were in. Then he called her weird. And maybe she was, but he had no right to announce it. “Excuse me,” Xio’s eyes flashed. “I’m weird? You won’t let me leave! YOU’RE weird!” He was smiling. He obviously thought this was funny to some degree.
“You know,” She looked around nonchalantly, “I really don’t feel that need to apologize soooo I guess we’re done.” There wasn’t even a reason to be this way anymore; now she just wanted to piss him off for some reason. Mainly because he had pissed her off and now she felt the need to retaliate. It wasn’t her fault she was socially inept. Okay, maybe it was a little, but she had tried at point. She couldn’t control other people and so far everyone she had attempted to be nice had thrown her to the dogs.
She could tell his was starting to get more than annoyed by now. She felt a small triumph in this and smirked as Even paced the floor before her. This was beginning to get entertaining. Not that she care or anything.

Evan turned all the way around once she answered him. Her answer, however, not being what he exactly wanted, made him laugh. He just began to laugh. Hearty noises from his diaphragm. As good as it gets. He knew that this would anger her, though, so he made a courteous attempt to stop. But failed. Trial and error. After a few quick moments, he stopped laughing and looked at her almost sternly, even though he could never pull that physique off. No, not with his fragile frame. All bones.
“My dear,” he said, smiling almost sweetly – bitter sweetly – “You are the one that called yourself weird. I simply just repeated the information,” he said innocently, folding his arms over his small chest. It’s not like he could be intimidating. No, not with limbs like twigs and a chest like paper. Eyes like pebbles and a chin like glass. No, he wasn’t intimidating. But it’s not like he was trying to be.
“But thank you,” he said with another smile, this one sweeter than the previous, “For the compliment. When my weirdness is recognized, I find it flattering.” He smirked, watching her intently. This whole situation, it snowballed. It started off as pure accident. Two occupants in a room that can only hold one. Then, it moved into social behavior. To speak or not to speak, was his question. To rivalry, so to speak. Anything you can do, I can do better. One thing led to another.
No, he wasn’t going to leave now. That option has sailed away a long time ago. Now, he thought, it was almost a battle of pride. “If we’re done, why are you still here?” he asked her, smirking. This time, he bothered not to hide it. If she wanted out that badly, she could have left. She could have ran away, if need be. But no, there she was, right in front of him, their eyes locked in their own internal battles.

We're doing fine And it gets better every time, We're doing fine But I'll let you decide
Was he seriously laughing? Xio glared at the boy before her, not understanding what was so funny. He just laughing. For no reason. She was pretty sure she hadn’t made any jokes. Then it hit her. He was laughing at her. And this, true to Evan’s predictions, infuriated her because who gave him the right to laugh at her? It wouldn’t have been half as bad if he had ceased his laughing the first time he tried to stop but the fact that he kept on really got to her. Despite all of this, Xio almost laughed too, when he tried to be serious and gave her this look. Almost.
She didn’t like his tone of voice, it was condescending and it irritated her even more than she already was.
She was trying to burn a hole through him but looks couldn’t kill. “Oh, shut up,” she retorted. She was teetering on the edge of amusement and frustration and it bothered her that she couldn’t just pick one already. She didn’t understand why she made everything difficult for herself, it was a stupid compulsion. “Don’t patronize me, I don’t appreciate it.” It was funny how he thought he could get to her. Well, she wasn’t going to let him.
Or she was going to try anyway, he was making it hard since he was already under her skin. Everything was all messed up. He was annoying, yet enticing. How could that be? And why the crap was he smiling? Ugh. Xio clenched her teeth for a moment and racked her brains for an insult to his statement, obviously mean to annoy her. “Oh, trust me, that was most definitely not a compliment, love.” She was never going to admit that she wasn’t starting to enjoy this. Even if they were only exchanging subtle insults.
That smirk. That stupid smirk that made her stop and blink. Xio didn’t have an answer for him. Not right way. “Honestly, I have no idea,” She admitted after a minute of silence. This time she wasn’t rude, she was just…honest. She couldn’t even answer the question to herself how the hell did he want an answer? She swallowed, her mouth dry. He was right. He Hadn’t said anything but the question said it all. Why was she still here? If she had wanted out that badly, not even he could stand in her way and yet here she was and the question remained with her. Why?

He listened to her reply, retort and repeat. But he never said a word. He only watched her. Yes, that sounds almost creepy. But it’s not like that. Evan just watched the way she would respond to him. Her body language. Her facial expressions. It was like watching a play. You’re so interested in the way the people interact, their movements, that you just tune out what they’re saying. Same concept here. Only, he took what she was saying into account, he just didn’t let her know that.
The moment she didn’t insult him, he frowned. He didn’t mean to, honestly, but he did. He was expecting her to just blow it off in his face. Call him a name, turn around and walk out. Anything but just answer him calmly and honestly. It caught him off guard. Speechless. And that was big, considering it was really hard to make him without words. Evan always has something. Wit.
There was a tense moment of silence, her answer still hanging in the air. He racked his brain for an answer. A comment. A suggestion to run out the door. But there, he had nothing. Nothing to say to her. It’s times like these, where words don’t seem to be enough, that Evan would use action. But what was there? He would nudge her towards the door, since that’s what she really wanted, but something in the very back of his mind told him not to. Not to come in contact with her physically. He couldn’t quite place why, but he’s always tried to trust his inner voice. Conscience.
He had no action to inflict upon her, so, instead, he stepped to the side. Out of her way. All six feet and five inches of height moved aside for her to pass. All the while the frown stayed upon his face. “Well, if you want to leave that badly,” he said, holding a hand out, gesturing towards the door, “You may. I won’t stop you.” He watched her, waiting for a reaction. “But if you do go,” he said suddenly, putting his arm down, “Can I at least know your name?” He bit his lip, hoping that possibly, this time he might get her name. Especially after all that arguing and insulting, it’s the least she could do. Right?

I want to be known for my hits not just my misses...
Eventually she stopped talking because he was just standing there and she couldn’t tell if he had just chosen to tune her or what but it was bothering here and well, that wasn’t good, because it meant she actually cared what he thought and you shouldn’t care what someone thinks if you just met them ten minutes ago and they’re being rude. He was just….standing there. Watching her. And she didn’t like it. He was probably thinking of another insult. She raised an eyebrow. “What?” Her voice was overly defensive.
If that had caught him off guard it had blow her away. Why the sudden change of tone? The question itself had made her stop and think and in all the time that had passes between now and then, she still did not have a real answer for him. Xio mirrored Evan’s expression. She didn’t understand, why was he frowning? She hadn’t insulted him or said anything this time and now he frowned? Boys. She would never understand them. This was making her anxious again because a few seconds ago he had been all confident and what not and now he was all quiet….
There was her chance, too. Waiting for her. She had plenty of time to go ahead just leave finally but were her feet glued to the floor…Xio bit her lips-- another nervous habit she needed to quit but she just didn’t know what to say! This was the moment when she took advantage of the silence and headed straight past him but she just couldn’t make her kegs function! And she would never admit it, but awkward or not, she wanted to stay now. Leaving would be so…stupid.
Of course, in the back of her mind was that other stupid voice telling her that everything happened for a reason. And if that was the case, that she was abalient for a reason and she avoided people for a reason and so she needed to stick to that routine before someone slipped and accidentally got close. It was her turn for him to make her freeze in surprise now. She hadn’t expected him to move at all. Part of her wanted him to stay in front of her. She wanted to shake her head no, and move him back but as if she could really do that. He didn’t look happy to say what he had to say so she was clueless as to why he was doing so. Her mouth parted a little, but nothing came out. She just stood there in silence before taking a small, unwanted step forward; her head hung a little.
But I don’t want to leave, she admitted to herself. His voice made her head snap up and in response Xio licked her dry lips and stepped back in front of him. She didn’t know what to do in this situation anymore. She hadn’t gotten this far talking to anyone in a long time. Not a real conversation, anyway. Insults and whatever else had taken place, it still counted. “Why,” She asked in honest bewilderment, “does it matter?” Her tone wasn’t impolite at all, it was just full of surprise. She brought her gaze up to meet his in curiosity.
